Biography

Heidi Conrod graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Honours Biology) from the University of Ottawa. Since then she studied painting, printmaking and drawing at the Ottawa School of Art and the University of Ottawa (Visual Arts).

Heidi is a creator of unusual worlds, blending the past and present giving the contemporary works a timless feel. Her references include; personal photos, found photos, memories, newspapers, and the Internet.

Her most recent paintings depict people and animals in an ambiguous free flowing narrative. The figures and animals carry detached or disconnected expressions. When integrated into the ethereal texture of the works, they convey and connect with the sense of detachment pervasive in contemporary society.

While the works convey a mood of uncertainty, they also seek to create a lighthearted whimsical attitude, contributing to the ambiguous impact on the viewer. This ambiguity is intended to engage and connect with the viewer and to tempt the viewer to create his/her own narrative interpretation.

Working in oil and wax, alternating layers of glaze and wax, putting on and taking off, allow for the unpredictable qualities of the medium to create and alchemic tension. The highly worked surfaces create psychological environments that engage the viewer in a state between reality and fantasy.

Heidi's work is found in numerous corporate and private collections.
